Victory Day in Russia.

Victory Day is one of the greatest holidays in Russia. It is a  celebration of the end of the World War II, which killed millions of people. 

This day, May 9,1945, will forever  remain in history and will always remind people of  those horrible days, starvation, devastation, loss of loved ones and bloody battles. 

Victory Day is a big and memorable day for every family in Russia. Almost every family has relatives and friends who fought or died in this horrible war. Our parents who were growing up in the war, remember these terrible days as well.  When the war just started, whole country, regardless of nationalities ( USSR included 15 repablics and more then 100 nationalities.), united and stood up to defend their homeland. 

Most European countries celebrate Remembrance or Victory day earlier – on May 8. 

In the USSR and Russia now the Victory Day is celebrated on May 9 and in 2021 it will be  the 76th anniversary of victory in the WWII. 

Why do Europe and Russia celebrate Victory on different days? 

The answer is very simple: the difference in time zones. 

The German Instrument of Surrender was signed late in the evening on May 8, 1945, at 22:43 and in Moscow was already 00:43, May 9. The Soviet government announced the Victory on May 9. 

The solemn parade in honor of the Victory in World War II was held on June 24, 1945,  on Red Square, in Moscow. 

On that day, the Soviet government and people laid flowers at the Lenin Mausoleum and  the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, who died in the war fiercely defending their homeland.The whole country had one minute of silence and in the evening was big celebrations and  fireworks. 

Since then, every year people have celebrated Victory Day, but not every year there was a military parade.  

The fourth parade includes the military equipment of the WWII took place only on  May 9,1990.

After the Soviet Union collapesed, military parades were not held until 1995. 

On May 9,1995, was the 50th anniversary of the end of the WWII and then two parades  on Red Square and on Poklonnaya Gora with the military troops and equipment were held in Moscow. 

Since 2008, the parade was organized not only with the participation of  military equipment, but also including military aviation. 

Now in Russia parades in Moscow have been carried annually. 

In present time, the Victory day remains a very important holiday for people: veterans  traditionally meet on May 9, recall their youth, which most of them fell in the war years, pays tribute to lost friends with whom they fought together. Festive events, concerts are  held in big cities, the official government lied flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, monuments of glory and military valor. 

In 2012, the Immortal Regiment campaign was held in Tomsk (Siberian city) for the first time: the participants of the campaign followed by a column and carried portraits of their relatives who fought in World War II. 

 In 2015, Moscow organizers proposed a march of the Immortal Regiment on the  Red Square where 500 thousand participants gathered for this campaign.

12 million people participated in the march across Russia. 

In 2016, the Immortal Regiment was held in 42 countries. 

Immortal Regiment march received national status, has become a great tradition and  one of the most important elements of the celebrations of Victory Day in Russia.
