How to choose restaurants when you travel.

Every country has its own national cuisine: food which is favorite and most often eaten within this area. National dishes are part of the local culture, as well as a popular “attraction” for any tourist.

Tasting traditional and popular food from other countries is always part of my journey. It helps to better understand the culture, local life and traditions of the country which we are visiting.

Moreover, an important factor while traveling is not only to enjoy food, but also to eat healthily to avoid an unpleasant situation with digestion.

When we are preparing for our trip, we always do deep research on what food we should try and where to eat at our destinations.

Here is my practical recommendation on how to choose a restaurant when you are traveling:

Do research.

Do deep research of what food to try and where to eat at your destination. Check the restaurant’s rating, prices, menu and read reviews and suggestions on TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google or blogs. Usually, people place their own photos and write honest reviews that will help you to choose a place.

Avoid tourist traps.

Don’t eat in the tourist area, because the food can look very appetizing, the smell will be amazing, the prices might look very reasonable, but you can be disappointed that you selected this restaurant.

We got into this tourist trap in Paris: we were very hungry and tired and the food at that restaurant looked so so good at first glance, but… but when I saw a cockroach… I lost my appetite and dinner was over……After this unpleasant experience, we always prepare a list of local restaurants and iconic places where we would like to eat and what kind of food we must try.

Eat local.

Eat with locals. If you go a couple of blocks away from the tourist area, you will be able to find a good restaurant with fantastic and delicious food and most likely cheaper.

Additionally, talk with local people or hotel receptionists for some recommendations and tips, but I still advise you do homework and prepare a restaurant’s list where you want to eat, because this way you will enjoy a great hassle-free gastronomic experience.

I really hope that my tips will help you make the right choice and nothing will spoil your trip.

  2. Back in my days of travel….in the last century (!) we also made a point of going where the locals went. The same principle works at home. For example, if you like Indian food, look for a place that is crowded with Indians. Your posts make me nostalgic for those long ago days!

    1. You’re absolutely right, it works at home city too.
Nostalgia seems sad, but it might be not bad feelings, because you recall your happy days 🙂
      Stay positive and safe!

    1. Picture menu- agree and disagree🙂 I disagree because in Japan, for example, hard to buy food without pictures or replica dish display.
Avoid Picture menu is a good tip too and all together will help to choose right restaurant and not to get into tourist trap.
Thanks a lot for your tip and comment.
