The massive marble mask known as the “Mouth of Truth” (Bocca della Veritá) is a well-known landmark in Rome, Italy. It is located in the entrance of Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church.
The massive, mythical sculpture is devoted to the God of the Sea and is 1.75 metres in diameter.
According to the ancient legend, the “Mouth of Truth” bites the hand of people who tell lies. However, if the person is telling the truth, nothing will happen, and that person will be declared innocent.

Hah. I remember this from the long ago film “Roman Holiday”. Gregory Peck put his hand in and pretended it had been chopped off. I can think of a few people who wouldn’t want to test it!
