City through the Lens: Elephant and Obelisk, Rome, Italy

The Elephant and Obelisk, located in Rome’s Piazza della Minerva, is a unique monument created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1667. It features a small Egyptian obelisk from the 6th century BC mounted on a marble elephant. Commissioned by Pope Alexander VII, the monument symbolizes the union of wisdom (the obelisk) and strength (the elephant), reflecting Renaissance themes.

Bernini’s playful design was inspired by a Renaissance book illustration of an elephant carrying an obelisk. This striking combination of ancient and Baroque elements has made it one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks.

    1. It’s located between Pantheon and Basilica di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. I love this monument and its created by Bernini.
