Just an hour from Amsterdam, in the heart of Rotterdam, you’ll find one of the most unique architectural sights in the Netherlands — the iconic Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen).
These bright yellow cubes are tilted at a sharp 45-degree angle and mounted on poles, creating a surreal, playful forest of geometric homes.
Designed in the 1970s by Dutch architect Piet Blom, the concept was to build a village within a city. Each cube represents a “tree,” and together they form an abstract urban forest. It’s bold, innovative, and totally unforgettable.

You’ll find them in the Blaak area, right near the Rotterdam Blaak train station. One of the houses is open to the public as a museum (Kijk-Kubus), where you can step inside and experience what it’s like to actually live in one of these tilted cubes.
This part of Rotterdam is also home to other architectural gems like the Markthal and the Old Harbour, making it a fantastic adventure.
Definitely one of the most unusual and creative sights . We made one day trip to Rotterdam and really enjoyed the city. It’s very modern.

Right?😀
Very unusual building.
We didn’t go inside. It was one day trip and we were running out of time. But there lots of shorts on Tik Tok that you can check out.

I’d love to see them but I think I would have trouble learning to live there!

Same here — I wouldn’t want to live there either! 😄 We didn’t go inside, but I watched a few videos — surprisingly, the apartment has a good space and everything inside is straight. It’s really just the windows that are tilted!

They really are strange , but cool. We didn’t go inside the Cube Houses, but just seeing them from the outside was such a fun experience. Rotterdam surprised us too — so modern. The city was heavily bombed during WWII, so they rebuilt it with bold, contemporary architecture. We were looking for something totally different from Amsterdam, and Rotterdam was the perfect contrast.

Totally get that! Just seeing the Cube Houses from the outside felt like stepping into a futuristic art exhibit 😄. And yes, Rotterdam’s modern vibe is such a refreshing contrast to Amsterdam’s charm, definitely a city that stands out with its bold reinvention!

Yes, Rotterdam felt so different from classical Amsterdam—really modern. I love the architecture . It’s very different and contemporary. The Cube Houses were like walking through an art installation 😄

Absolutely! It’s amazing how a city can reinvent itself so boldly, Rotterdam really embraces creativity in every corner. Glad we both got to experience that surreal, art-meets-architecture vibe! 😄

The cube houses look so cool. I imagine what it must look like from the inside. Neat to hear that one of the houses is actually a museum so you can peek inside.

It is cool and fun. We didn’t go inside, but I watched a few videos—inside, everything is quite normal and practical, just the windows and walls are tilted. Very creative design but I’m not sure if I want to live there 😀

Nice piece Angela, I remember well stumbling upon these way back in 2004/2005 during a visit to Rotterdam. The city definitely stands apart in terms of unique architecture.

😀 I know what you mean! Living in one would definitely feel like being inside a puzzle—but might be fun. Who knows?
