Stress-Free Vacation Planning Tips: Planning & Booking Tips. Part 1.

Planning a trip should be exciting, not stressful. But with so many options, deals, and choices, it can feel overwhelming.

I believe that planning ahead is the key to an easy and enjoyable trip.

In this guide, I’ll share my tips for planning and booking a trip: how to compare flights, when it makes sense to buy a package, and why travel insurance is worth thinking about before you go. These are the same steps I use when planning my own vacations. They help me save money, avoid stress, and enjoy the trip from the very start.

After choosing my destination, the first thing I study is the city map.

I want to know:

  • Where downtown is
  • Which neighborhoods are safe: Search “best areas to stay” and “areas to avoid”.
  • Check TripAdvisor or Google reviews (start with the bad ones—they reveal useful details).
  • How far the airport is
  • What’s near the attractions on my list

Once I know which area I prefer to stay in, here’s how I narrow it down and save money:

Compare Across Multiple Sites

  • Always check sites like Booking.com, Expedia/Travelocity, Hotels.com, etc. and the hotel’s own website.
  • Hotels sometimes offer direct booking perks—like free breakfast, upgrades, or late checkout.
  • Look at room size (many city hotels are tiny), bed size, A/C, safe, fridge and if there’s a mini kitchen. Whatever is important to you.
  • Always look at the map—being close to transit can save time and taxi costs.
  • In sunny destinations, packages often include hotels way cheaper than booking separately.

Here are some helpful sites:

  • Trip.com – Outstanding combination of more than 1.4 million hotels and over 2.7 million flight routes
  • Agoda offers three millions hotels in 200+ countries
  • Hostelworld – The global hostel-focused online booking platform with 36,000 properties in over 178 countries.

Read reviews carefully

  • Don’t just rely on star ratings.
  • 3-star reviews are the most balanced—usually not too angry, not too glowing.
  • Watch for complaints: noise, cleanliness, bad Wi-Fi, and hidden fees.
  • Use TripAdvisor to read reviews

Choose Flexible Cancellation

  • If your dates aren’t 100% fixed, book with free cancellation.
  • Keep checking prices—if they drop, cancel and re-book. This trick can save hundreds over the years.

Join loyalty programs

Sign up for hotel loyalty programs.

For example:

  • Booking.com program gives automatic discounts.
  • Hotels.com gives you a free night after 10 nights.
  • Travelocity and Expedia have “member-only prices.”
  • Ascott (Citadines Apart’Hotel) gives a special rate for members, deals, sends a 25% discount voucher around your birthday, plus extras like free breakfast or airport pickup. We had a good experience each time we stayed at this Apart’Hotel. Read this post for more information.

Timing matters

  • For big cities: book early (3–4 months ahead).
  • For resorts: sometimes last-minute deals (1 -3 weeks) are the cheapest.
  • For business cities: weekends can be cheaper, weekdays more expensive (opposite of beach spots).

Once you have decided where you wish to stay. Set aside this hotel; we’ll go back to it later. After that, we’ll look for a flight and flight connections that work for you.

Google Flights is where I usually compare prices first, then with airline websites and other travel websites.

The length of my flight, the number of stops, and the overlay at the airports are all important to me. I want to be able to switch planes without having to stay at the airport for too long.

Travelocity packages are often great for city trips. Sites like Red Tag or Sunwing can be cheaper for family vacations or sunny beach destinations.

Once more, do in-depth research on all websites, but choose trustworthy and reliable ones.

Use flight search tools

  • Google Flights is great for comparing airlines. It’s super easy to see the entire month. You can quickly spot the cheapest day to fly.
  • Skyscanner shows the cheapest destinations and flexible options.
  • Travelocity/Expedia packages: sometimes their flight+hotel is cheaper than just the flight.
  • Kayak sometimes finds hidden deals that Google Flights misses.

Be flexible with dates & airports

  • Flying mid-week is often cheaper than on weekends.
  • Early morning or late-night flights can also cost less.
  • Check nearby airports—sometimes a short drive or train ride saves a lot.

Set up price alerts

  • On Google Flights or Skyscanner, you can turn on alerts.
  • You’ll get an email or app notification when the price drops.
  • Watch daily for sudden price drops. Sometimes deals last only a few hours.

Book at the right time

Booking too early or too late can be more expensive, so book at the right time:

  • For international trips2–4 months in advance is often best.
  • For domestic trips, 1–3 months usually gives good deals.
  • For sunny destinations (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, etc.), often last-minute packages (1–3 weeks before) are the cheapest.

Consider packages

Sometimes booking a flight + hotel together comes out cheaper than buying separately.

Helpfull Sites:

  • Kiwi offers booking service for flight, train and bus tickets
  • CheapOair is a leading provider of airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars and vacation packages
  • WayAway is a flight aggregator that provides travelers with the best rates on airline tickets
  • Aviasales is a trusted service for buying cheap flight tickets.
  • Omio brings more than 1,000 transportation providers offering tickets for trains, buses, flights, and ferries, as well as car rentals and airport transfers.

Clear cookies or use incognito mode

Some sites raise prices if they see you searching multiple times. Using an incognito/ private window or a different browser can help.

Use points & rewards

If you have a travel credit card, sign up for points programs (like Aeroplan in Canada or airline-specific rewards). Redeeming your points can help.

At this point, you have all the necessary flight and hotel information. You choose if it’s better for you to buy everything separately or as a package. Find the greatest deal and make all the reservations.

Once I book, I always call the airline and hotel to confirm reservations. It takes 15 minutes and avoids surprises on arrival.

Don’t Skip Travel Insurance. It might not be the most exciting part of planning a trip—but trust me, travel insurance is worth it. Many people regret skipping it. A missed flight, lost luggage, or unexpected illness abroad can cost way more than the insurance itself.

I have medical travel insurance through work, and my credit card has baggage coverage, but I still buy trip cancellation and interruption insurance when booking flights or packages.

Type of travel insurance:

  • Medical insurance (cover emergency medical expenses)
  • Trip cancellation (if you can’t travel before you leave )
  • Trip interruption (if something cuts your trip short)
  • Baggage coverage (lost/delayed luggage can ruin the start of a vacation)
  • Flight accident coverage (extra peace of mind)

Why It Matters?

  • Even in “safe” destinations, accidents or illnesses happen.
  • A simple ER visit abroad can cost thousands of dollars without coverage.
  • Weather delays, strikes, or cancellations can happen anytime.

Many booking sites offer insurance at checkout. Compare those prices with standalone providers—sometimes packages are cheaper, sometimes a separate plan gives better coverage.

For more information about travel insurance, check out my post Should you buy a Travel Insurance?

Extra safety:

  • Make copies of passports and medical cards—keep them in each bag.
  • Write down your embassy’s contact info and local emergency numbers.

Check Travel Insurance services:

  • VisitorsCoverage provides travel insurance for millions of global travelers in over 175 countries.
  • EKTA travel insurance is for people who travel or go abroad. Everyone between the ages of 3 and 85 can buy it online on a website.
  • AirHelp has helped more than 10 million passengers understand their rights and receive compensation for delayed or canceled flights.
  • Insubuy is currently the largest provider of visitors insurance for medical coverage as well as emergency medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, and travel-related coverages—for foreigners visiting United States.
  • Compensair is a UK based online service that helps air travelers to receive compensation from airlines in case of a flight delay, cancellation, or denied boarding.
  • Traveloka is Southeast Asia’s leading travel platform, delivering world-class travel experiences — from flights and accommodations to curated travel activities and local attractions, making every journey effortless and memorable

  • Always carry local cash for taxis, tips, or small shops.
  • Tell your bank you’re traveling so they don’t block your card.
  • Consider a credit card with no foreign transaction fees.
  • Download Google Maps offline for your destination.
  • Check your roaming plan, buy a local SIM, or use an e-SIM app like Airalo for cheap internet.

Airalo is the world’s first eSIM store that solves the pain of high roaming bills by giving travelers access to eSIMs (digital SIM cards). More than one million people are already using Airalo’s eSIMs.

Drimsim is a plastic card with a chip, just like any other, which you can insert into your phone, tablet, or router. Drimsim operates in 229 countries, provides stable communication, a fast Internet connection, and prices similar to those of local operators.
