Did you know the two fountains in St. Peter’s Square weren’t built at the same time?

The first fountain was designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613. More than 60 years later, Gian Lorenzo Bernini added the matching fountain, creating the perfect symmetry we see today.

Bernini designed it to complement his famous colonnades, symbolizing the “welcoming arms of the Church.” The flowing water also helped soften the noise of the large crowds, while on sunny days the fountain’s mist often creates beautiful rainbows.

A perfect example of how architecture can be both beautiful and functional.
